The Wisconsin Maritime Museum, an AAM accredited institution and Smithsonian Affiliate, celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2009. In 2010, the museum will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the arrival of the icon in its collection, the WWII submarine USS Cobia. Cobia is an historic vessel, placed on the national register in 1986; it represents the 28 submarines built in Manitowoc during WWII. The submarine is acknowledged as the most historically intact WWII submarine in existence; it SJ radar is the oldest operating radar in the world. With 60,000 sq. ft. (30,000 sq. ft. added in 2003) of modern facilities, the museum offers the visitor a unique and engaging experience of Wisconsin's maritime history from the age of great sailing schooners built in this community to lake ferries and freighters to submarines. Exhibits include a full-scale cross-section of a 19th century schooner, triple expansion steam engine from a renowned Great Lakes ferry, re-creation of the town's 19th century main street, impeccable yachts, and an astounding collection of model ships. The museum's education programs are wide-ranging and academically grounded. Interactive exhibits include an aquatic invasive species laboratory (new in 2009), fishing simulator, and children's waterways room.
