Texas State Historical Association
Company Overview
Texas State Historical Association (TSHA), the state’s oldest historical organization dedicated to preserving and promoting the rich history of Texas. Since 1897, TSHA has provided trusted educational resources, publications, and programs that inspire appreciation for Texas’s unique past. Whether you're an educator, student, historian, or lifelong learner, discover how TSHA connects Texans with their history.
We are the state’s longest-running publisher of books on Texas history, with our first volume published in 1918. Over the years, we have built a reputation for producing high-quality, award-winning books and Handbook entries on a wide array of topics, including exploration, biography, architecture, historic sites, high school football, labor unions, and suburbanization. Enthusiasts of Texas’s rich history will find something to enjoy among our diverse collection of books and entries.
Sound scholarship serves as the foundation for all of our programs, products, and services. Our leadership and members work together to ensure that Texas history scholarship is supported, promoted, and disseminated broadly. As a part of this effort, we offer several awards and fellowships to encourage the study and teaching of Texas history.
Company History
The association was quartered initially in the Department of History at the University of Texas at Austin. It moved in 1950 to the Barker Texas History Center and in 1971 to Sid Richardson Hall. In November 2007, after 110 years of affiliation with the University of Texas, the association moved to private offices in northwest Austin while several universities discussed the possibility of hosting the association on their campuses. An agreement was accepted with the University of North Texas, and the university renovated space in Stovall Hall on the Denton campus to fit the needs of the association. In November 2008 the association moved to the newly remodeled offices on the campus of the University of North Texas in Denton. In May 2015 the association announced its return to the University of Texas at Austin campus. Jesús "Frank" de la Teja became executive director in 2018, followed by William "Bill" Ellis, Heather Green Wooten, and J.P. Bryan, Jr. in October 2022.
