Company Overview

The Tarble Arts Center is a division of the College of Arts and Humanities, Eastern Illinois University. The Center operates a year-round schedule of changing visual arts exhibitions, education and outreach activities, and other public programs to serve EIU and east-central Illinois. The Center works cooperatively with other units of EIU, and with area schools and arts organizations to serve as a regional arts center. The 1,000-piece collection is focused primarily on 20th century Illinois folk art, American Scene and contemporary works on paper, and paintings by Paul T. Sargent and Robert M. Root.

Company History

The Tarble Arts Center opened in 1982 with a large, flexible gallery space, smaller gallery, classroom, and support facilities. An addition in 2004 added a multi-use Atrium, small experimental gallery, meeting room, and support areas. The Tarble was accredited by the American Association of Museums in 2000 and is the only facility on Eastern's campus built entirely through donated funds. Programs are supported by member donations, endowments in the EIU Foundation, and sponsors. The staff includes a Director, Assistant Director, Curator of Education, Office Manager, plus part-time graduate and student assistants, interns and volunteers.
