Company Overview
Phoenix Art Museum is the leading visual arts institution in the Southwest. Originally incorporated in 1949, the first part of the current Museum building opened in 1959. An addition, nearly tripling the size to 73,000 square feet was completed in 1965. The Museum expanded again in 1996. That expansion project included a dramatic new 46,000 square foot structure, extensive renovation of the original facility as well as renovation of an existing library building.
In November 2006, the Museum successfully completed a $50 million expansion, leading to the realization of its 250,000 square foot master plan. The 1996 and 2006 expansions, designed by the award-winning firm of Tod Williams/Billie Tsien & Associates of New York City, integrate art and architecture with the southwestern landscape and provide sweeping interior spaces. The founding of the Museum and its development reflect the constant commitment from the community and mirror the growth of Phoenix from a small desert town into the fifth largest city in the United States and the eleventh largest metro area.
The Museum collection numbers over 18,000 works of art from the Americas, Europe, and Asia. Curatorial areas are American, Asian, European, Modern and Contemporary, Fashion Design and now Latin American. In addition, through a long-term collaboration with the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona in Tucson, the Museum also presents regular exhibitions of some of the world’s finest photography. There is also a Sculpture Garden housing modern sculptures, the Thorne Miniature Rooms of historic interiors, and an interactive children’s area, PhxArtKids. Several galleries are devoted to changing exhibitions and the new Ellen and Howard C. Katz Wing for Modern Art feature 10 galleries, a 48-foot atrium, a flying staircase, light wells and enclosed exterior overlook balconies.
