We serve the nation by welcoming all people to explore and experience art, creativity, and our shared humanity. The museum is committed to fostering a visitor-focused experience, and to preserving, collecting, exhibiting, and fostering the understanding of works of art in accordance with the highest professional and scholarly standards. Our collection of more than 150,000 works of art, includes European and American paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, drawings, prints, illustrated books, rare books, photographs, and new media, complemented by active scholarly publishing, special exhibitions, and educational programs. The National Gallery's scholarly resources are among the best in the United States, including a major research library, photographic archives, extensive conservation facilities, and the Center for Advanced Study in the History of Art, with its visiting research scholars and scholarly programs. paintings, sculpture, decorative arts, photographs, prints, and drawings spans the history of European and American art and showcases some of the triumphs of human creativity. Across 363 days a year, the National Gallery offers a full spectrum of special exhibitions and public programs free of charge.
The National Gallery’s revived mission, vision, values, and strategic priorities, reestablished in 2021, place a sustainable and equitable museum at the center of our actions. During Kaywin Feldman’s first three years as director, 50.6% of works acquired by purchase were by artists of color and 32% of total exhibitions and installations approved and planned through 2026 will feature artists of color. The National Gallery understands that in order to continue this transition authentically and to be representative of the realities of our country, leadership and staff must reflect nationwide demographics as well. Since 2019, the National Gallery leadership team and elected trustees have gone from 0% to 60% and 40% BIPOC, respectively. This commitment is present at all levels, with an increase in BIPOC staff in higher grade positions, hosting seminars to engage curatorial staff with leading voices in expanding and developing a more inclusive collection, and adding two vital curatorial positions: specialists in Latinx Art and African American and Diasporic Art.
