Museum Mission and Background:
For more than 60 years, MOHAI has been dedicated to enriching lives by preserving, sharing, and teaching the diverse history of Seattle, the Puget Sound region and the nation. With a collection of nearly 4 million artifacts, photographs, oral histories and archival items, and an expansive schedule of exhibits and programs, Museum of History & Industry, MOHAI, is the region’s premier history center. Annually more than 200,000 visitors connect with the past and explore the future at MOHAI, including 35,000 students and their teachers. MOHAI has a history of financial stability with a strong endowment, is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, and is an official affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. MOHAI on the Move:
In December 2012, MOHAI opened a dramatic and award-winning new museum in Lake Union Park in Seattle’s vibrant South Lake Union neighborhood. Developed by a team of nationally renowned designers and historians, the museum experience features an expansive core exhibit highlighted by thousands of artifacts and images from the MOHAI collection as well as highly imaginative interactive experiences; a special exhibits gallery for traveling and temporary exhibitions; a changing community gallery; a maritime gallery; and dramatic events spaces, including a Grand Atrium and lakefront pavilion. The museum complements these experiences with an impressive range of family, adult and educational programs that serve thousands of participants throughout the year. In addition to the new museum, in 2012 MOHAI opened a 50,000 s.f. Resource Center in Seattle’s Georgetown neighborhood, providing first-rate facilities for the museum’s expanding collections, research library, conservation labs, exhibit workshops and administrative offices. In October 2013, MOHAI opened a new feature of the museum, the Bezos Center for Innovation, designed to engage visitors of all ages in the history and culture of innovation in our region..
