Edsel & Eleanor Ford House was the home of Edsel B. Ford (only child of Ford Motor Company founder, Henry Ford), his wife Eleanor and their four children. The 86-acre estate is located in the Detroit suburb of Grosse Pointe Shores along 3,000 feet of waterfront on scenic Lake St. Clair. Designed by famed architect Albert Kahn in the English Cotswold style and completed in 1929, the home features a collection of more than 8,000 objects of fine and decorative arts, automobiles, furniture, textiles, books and periodicals, an archival collection, and a study collection for research and temporary exhibitions. The estate’s grounds, designed by prominent landscape architect Jens Jensen, include five historic structures, a modern visitor center, and various maintenance and storage buildings. The estate’s buildings and grounds are preserved and open to the public for tours, activities, and special events with approximately 40,000 people visiting annually. Ford House employs a full-time staff of 39, a part-time staff of 50, and operates with an annual budget of approximately $5 million.
