Company History

The Colorado Railroad Museum was founded in 1959 in Golden, Colorado, with the nonprofit Colorado Railroad Historical Foundation, Inc. organized in 1963 to assume ongoing operation. It was recognized as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 1964. The Museum has grown its collections, site and offerings over the years, and today is recognized by Visit Denver as one of the region's Top 10 Attractions. The Museum is currently focused on significant site improvements, improved collections care, and provision of long-term funding for its fleet of three operating steam locomotives, with vintages ranging from 1881 to 1927. It has hosted Day Out With Thomas family events annually since 2004, and its own uniquely theatrical version of The Polar Express Train Ride event since 2014.
