Company History

The Museum was originally built as a private home in 1853. Robert Moffat Bruce (1822-1908), a wealthy textile merchant and member of the New York Cotton Exchange, bought the house and property in 1858.
In 1908, Robert Bruce bequeathed his home to the Town of Greenwich and stipulated that it be used "as a Natural History, Historical and Art Museum, for the use and benefit of the public."
In time, growing audiences required larger facilities and the Museum was renovated and expanded. Designed by Shope Reno Wharton, the new facility opened in 1993 and featured 8,000 square feet of gallery space.
In 1998 the Bruce Museum received accreditation from AAM which was subsequently renewed in 2007.
After several years of planning and an ongoing, community-wide fundraising effort, leaders of the Campaign for the New Bruce announced the start of construction in October 2020 for the centerpiece of the Bruce Museum’s latest expansion project: a three-story, 43,000-square-foot addition that more than doubled the size of the Museum, adding state-of-the-art exhibition galleries for art and science, and new education and community spaces, including a cafe and an auditorium. The doors of this transformative addition opened in April 2023.
