Company Overview
Our Mission: To celebrate the power of art to inspire, instruct, challenge, and build community through collections, exhibitions, events, educational and cultural programs.
The Art Museum of Greater Lafayette (AMGL), a not-for-profit organization, has been privately funded since its founding in 1909. Located in Lafayette, Indiana. Its thought-provoking exhibitions, and dynamic programs enrich the lives of families throughout the region. AMGL encourages diversity in art appreciation and artistic expression by opening its doors, classes, and exhibitions to people of all ages, colors, races, ethnic backgrounds, national origins, religious beliefs, gender, gender expression, sexual orientation, disability, familial status, and/or veteran status.
AMGL is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums (AAM), which is achieved by less than 5% of all museums in the United States. The corporation’s board of directors governs AMGL policies, facilities, and programs and employs the Executive Director. AMGL’s permanent art collection began in 1911, contains over 1,300 objects, and remains its most valuable asset.
The Indiana Chamber of Commerce selected Greater Lafayette as the winner of its 2021 Community of the Year Award. Greater Lafayette has a population of 200,000 and over 5,000 businesses. The leading industries in Greater Lafayette were Health Care and Social Services, Education, Retail, and Hotel and Food Services. It is home to Purdue University, Ivy Tech Community College, Purdue Research Park and game-changing industries, manufacturers with worldwide reach, great healthcare, sports centers, hundreds of nightspots, and a wide variety of cultural experiences. Voted among the safest and healthiest cities in the nation; featuring beautiful parks and miles of walking and bike trails.
College students use the Permanent Collection as a resource for classes and other research projects. Activities, events, workshops, and art classes engage children, teens, and adults in appreciating art.
AMGL employs four full-time and three part-time staff, operates in a 12,000 square foot building with five galleries and a Museum Shop. The museum hosted 10,000+ visitors in 2019. AMGL is developing plans and exploring funding for a new AMGL facility within the next five years.
The AMGL depends on contributions and gifts from members and receives no ongoing public support. Membership provides 20% of our annual operating support. Exhibitions are made possible through sponsorships by businesses, individuals, and organizations. AMGL presents changing exhibitions to the public several times each year in each of five galleries. In addition, several special events are hosted each year, with more than 20% of the museum’s revenue generated from these events. The museum’s signature fundraiser is the annual Heart of Art wine dinner and auction.
AMGL has a Foundation that provides financial support and assistance to the Museum. Founded in 1982, the Foundation receives and acquires assets for the benefit of AMGL with the investment objectives of maximizing the long-term financial support of AMGL. Current assets total 2 million dollars.
The Art League, founded in 1965, supports educational and fund-raising activities, exhibitions, acquisitions, provides student and teacher scholarships and programs for AMGL. The Art League is governed by its own board of directors and manages its budget and endowments.
