Appleton Museum of Art of the College of Central Florida

About CF: The college serves a diverse student population of 13,600 credit and 5,100 noncredit students annually. The college offers certificates and associate degrees in 66 programs, prepares students for careers requiring professional and technical training; encourages student success through a variety of support services; and promotes the economic, social and cultural development of the community.” CF has just begun to offer its first baccalaureate degrees.

The college was established in 1958 as a comprehensive public community college to serve the under-educated and economically limited population in the tri-county area (Marion, Citrus and Levy). The College has its main campus in Ocala (Marion County), with branch campuses in Lecanto (Citrus County) and Chiefland (Levy County). The tri-county population is 513,335 per the 2010 Census; approximately 19% are classified as minorities and more than 26% are seniors. With a total service area of 3,290 square miles, the region is sparsely populated, has large pockets of severely low-income households, and a significant lack of educational attainment.

In recent years the college has grown substantially and improved its programming and physical plant. This spring it was recognized for the second year in a row as a Round One winner in the national competion for the Aspen Prize for community college excellence.

About the Appleton Museum of Art: Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the Museum became the responsibility of the College in 2005. This impressive 81,000 square foot facility with its even more impressive 18,000+ works of art is a cultural anchor within the large, diverse state of Florida. Once they pass through the marble-columned entrance and open its great glass front doors, Floridians from a hundred mile radius around Ocala and beyond experience world-class art spanning the centuries and representing cultures from around the globe. European masterpieces from several centuries representing many of the great artists and artistic movements from the history of Western culture join venerable examples of fine art from other cultures around the world including Asian, African, Pre-Columbian, Islamic and Ancient Mediterranean.

Stationed at the crossroads between south and north Florida with the larger cities of Gainesville, Daytona, Orlando and Tampa at the ends of each radius, the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, Florida serves a broad section of primarily rural Florida with constituents who are not afforded on a daily basis the kind of cultural experiences present in larger communities. Thus the Appleton has become a cultural hub – a meeting place – where art and people come together……in Ocala….in Central Florida. From experiencing works of fine art on its walls, to arts festivals, art-making through workshops and classes for all ages, to multidisciplinary cultural events and college art, history and other classes taught on site the museum and its stakeholders in the community are most proud of the central roll this institution has come to play in the cultural life of its community.
