Company Profile

Alexandria Archaeology

Company Overview

The City of Alexandria governs the city located in northern Virginia, bordered by the District of Columbia (Potomac River), Arlington and Fairfax counties. With a population of approximately 150,000 and a land area of 15.75 square miles, Alexandria is the seventh largest city in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Alexandria has a charming waterfront and is a unique and historic place to live and work. About one-quarter of the city's square miles have been designated as a national or local historic district. Alexandria Archaeology, a division of the Office of Historic Alexandria Department, is dedicated to preserving and studying Alexandria's rich archaeological heritage and fostering within residents and visitors a connection between the past and present while inspiring a sense of stewardship and adventure. We own and operate the Alexandria Archaeology Museum where visitors learn how the City’s archaeologists, volunteers, and students work with residents and developers to study and manage archaeological resources important to the community's past.

Notable Accomplishments / Recognition

In 1975, the City of Alexandria established the Alexandria Archaeological Commission, the first such group in America. This was the first step in professionalizing the practice of archaeology in Alexandria. Since that time, Alexandria Archaeology has grown from a rescue operation in the Old Town area to a City-wide community archaeology program.
